One Night in Miami
U.S., 2020
Regina King’s feature directorial debut, adapted by Kemp Powers from his play of the same name, imagines a pivotal night on Feb. 25, 1964, between Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, Sam Cooke and Malcolm X. Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Malcolm X in particular “exerts a gravitational pull” in this poignant chamber piece. Featuring a Terrance Blanchard score, the film elegantly reveals these icons beyond public persona, exposing their fears, hopes and the weight of their influence on — and responsibilities to — the Black community.—Public Programmer Beandrea July
