A Nice Place

For a decade, sociologist-turned-filmmaker Cho Uhn follows four generations of a family repeatedly displaced from Seoul’s hillside slum of Daldongne. Through grandma (halmeoni in Korean) Jung, the family’s emotional anchor, the film traces their struggle for stability amid demolition and redevelopment. Both ethnographic and experimental, this documentary exposes how urban poverty persists across generations in a rapidly modernizing Korea. A Nice Place premiered at the 2009 Seoul International Women’s Film Festival.
