This workshop will give an introduction to using and working with Jupyter notebooks, the browser based programming tool that allows you to interleave executable code with explanatory text, mathematics, and rich representations of resulting objects. We will demonstrate features of Jupyter, including markdown, slideshow generation, report generation, and adding additional languages beyond Python to Juypter.

Objectives

  • Describe the architecture of a Jupyter notebook environment, including the notebook server, programming language kernels, and interactive widgets.
  • Use a Jupyter notebook to create, manage and report on the execution of a programmatic workflow using a structured document combining narrative text, executable code, executed code output and embedded media items.
  • Be able to access the wider Jupyter community, including but not limited to the Jupyter Google Group, Stack Overflow and communities around specific Python packages
