OpenRefine has been described as “a power tool for working with messy data”. It provides tools for preparing and normalizing data, including cleaning and transforming it from one format into another. extending and enhancing it with web services, and even connecting to external data.

After this course, learners will be able to:

  • Successfully import data into OpenRefine
  • Split cells which contain multiple bits of data so that each piece of data is in its own cell
  • Explain what faceting, filtering and clustering operations are in OpenRefine
  • Use facets and filters to work with a subset of data
  • Use clustering to identify and fix replace varying forms of the same data with a single consistent value
  • Introduce Boolean values and how to run transformations based on them
  • Introduce how to use external APIs and reconciliation services
